Safe Blood Africa Project, Rotary Club
of Carmel Valley

by Chris Kaufman

Access to safe blood in Nigeria is a challenge for both patients and health care workers. Mothers giving birth, children suffering from malaria, anemic patients as well as victims of traffic accidents and violence must find someone – often a friend or relative - to give them blood. If no friend or family member is available, they must pay someone off the street for their blood, leaving little time to properly screen the blood. Blood supplies are extremely limited in the country.

Since 2004, The Safe Blood Africa Project has established a voluntary blood donor program in areas where blood banks are limited. Additionally, The Safe Blood Africa Project has donated several blood storage refrigerators with temperature monitors and a backup generator to publicly owned community hospitals. The Safe Blood Africa Project has made this happen through Rotary club donations, Rotary District grants and Rotary Foundation matching grants. The Safe Blood Africa Project is a Rotary Cooperating Organization, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Carmel Valley, California.
