Change the Truth—Uganda

by Gloria Baker Feinstein

I founded a non-profit, Change the Truth, to provide opportunities to 190 Ugandan orphans, specifically those who live at St. Mary Kevin Orphanage Motherhood in Kajjansi. These children have been orphaned by civil war and/or AIDS. Without assistance, their outlook for the future would be dim.

I started the organization after my first trip to east Africa simply because I knew I had to do more than put the photographs I had just made into a neatly packaged portfolio box.

The primary goal of Change the Truth is to provide the children with basic needs: food, education, medical care and the development of sustainable ongoing projects, such as gardening, brick making and farming.

On my most recent trip to the orphanage, my third, I chose to do a project in collaboration with some of the children. I asked them to write about a dream (kilooto) they had while asleep at night. Together, we then sought to make a photograph that would “illustrate” that dream.

Ultimately, the overriding goal is to empower the children with a sense of self and a sense of hope. The eyes of the children light up when they are given the chance to express their own voices; in the “Dream Series” they were allowed to do just that.
