Restoring Dignity—Medical Missionaries of Mary

by Laurence Boland

These photos tell the courageous story of young African mothers and how they are helped to move away from a life where they merely endure and exist without hope, to having their dignity and self respect restored, thanks to the Obstetric Fistula Project at Kitovu Hospital in Uganda. Obstetric fistula, a severe medical condition, is a hole created between the vagina and anus or the bladder.

Under the guidance of Surgeon Sister Maura Lynch [Medical Missionaries of Mary], Surgeons Dr John Kelly and Dr Michael Breen arrived at Kitovu Hospital and over a two-week period they performed much needed Fistula operations for the women of Uganda and beyond, thereby restoring their dignity.

Dr Kelly has dedicated the past 40 years of his life in serving women of the developing world. He has performed thousands of Fustula procedures and continues to do so. It is hoped, in the future to have a permanent Fistula Surgeon at the hospital.
