Operare per

by Massimo Dall' Argine

Bangladesh is one of the poorest and most densely populated countries in the world. 60% of the population is under 25 and health conditions are desperate. Extreme poverty and difficult conditions guarantee the majority of the population will not have appropriate medical care; children, especially, appear to be the most fragile and weak. Since pediatric surgery is not available in Bangladesh, many children die at birth from congenital malformations; most of those who survive live with their anomalies. Born with a congenital malformation with no possibility of cure means a lifetime of suffering and social exclusion.

Operare per is an Italian non-profit organization of pediatric surgeons, treating congenital malformations in poor countries. In Bangladesh, the pediatric surgical teams of Operare per work for two months each year in Santa Maria Sick Assistance Center, a missionary hospital in Khulna. Every year, thousands of children come to the hospital from all over the country to have medical treatment. Since 1991, about 2,000 children have been operated on, giving them the chance of a normal life.
