The International Rescue Committee

by Nancy Farese

The IRC was started in 1933 at the suggestion of Albert Einstein to aid persecuted artists and intellectuals escape from Nazi Germany. The IRC now works in 42 war-torn or post-conflict countries providing emergency relief, and helping to rebuild the lives of those displaced by man-made or natural disaster. I went to Kakuma Refugee Camp on the Kenyan-Sudanese border to photograph the nutrition and sanitation work of the IRC, and the effects of the widespread famine on the local people Turkana population. I found the work being done there astonishing; in the face of overwhelming macro-economic, political and demographic issues, IRC staff worked with skill and dedication to address the crisis right in front of them – the pregnant woman, the orphaned child, the malnourished family. Health care and food is being delivered with respect, dignity and hope in the face of extreme circumstances.
