The Malaria Consortium

by William Daniels

Malaria causes over one million deaths each year, mostly pregnant women and children under five: every 30 seconds a child dies from malaria. In some countries, the disease accounts for up to 40% of public health expenditure and 50% of hospital admissions. Malaria is one of the leading causes of death and disease worldwide, especially in the developing world.

The Malaria Consortium is the world's leading not-for-profit dedicated to the control of malaria. They work to secure access for groups most at risk, in prevention, and in the care and treatment of malaria. They also work to increase the coverage of effective malaria prevention tools by distributing long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) to those who need them and training people to use them properly.

As a photographer working on malaria on a long-term basis, Malaria Consortium and I naturally got in touch and collaborated together. Twice, I covered their work in Africa. First, in Northern Uganda where the organization is fighting malaria, notably in IDP camps, with the people displaced by twenty years of war. Then, I went to Northern Nigeria, where Malaria Consortium, through its subsidiary SuNMaP (Support to National Malaria Program), is leading a huge, free mosquito nets distributions campaign. Over 60 million long lasting LLINs are being distributed to every household in Nigeria, protecting millions of lives from malaria. This comprehensive nationwide effort represents an unprecedented opportunity to address one of Nigeria’s biggest health problems.

Our collaborations resulted in an advocacy exhibition in London and a book Mauvais Air, featuring 2 years of work on malaria, including the part done with Malaria Consortium
