2009 PhotoPhilanthropy Activist Awards Winners

Please join us in celebrating the winners of the 2009 PhotoPhilanthropy Activist Awards.

We received 219 essays from 187 photographers who reside in over 30 different countries. Of these entries, 150 were from Professionals, 49 from Amateurs and 20 from Students and their essays showed the work of 197 non-profit organizations operating in 63 countries. This amazing collection of essays shows the global reach of photography and the incredible efforts being made by non-profit organizations to better so many lives.

“I think there has evolved a language of journalistic photography with its particular rhetoric, and I feel that it is so predictable that we often turn the page and fail to really think about the situations they depict.  So I tried to choose essays where there was a really fresh approach, whether that was naive or intentional or both, since in photography the subject and the form are aligned so particularly.”
